The procurement picture for NZRT is easy to describe right now: no stock, no active orders, no signed supplier agreements. What makes Phase A worth doing is that this emptiness is temporary and intentional. The assumptions behind the Architecture Vision are not abstract --- they will determine whether an Iteasel device ends up on a desk in a kura classroom or stays a concept in a document.
Working through the Phase A materials (Architecture Vision, Statement of Architecture Work, Stakeholder Map --- links below), a few things stand out from a supply chain perspective. The organisation assumes a self-hosted, open-source-first posture. That is not just a cost preference --- it is a hard constraint when your end users cannot afford licensing fees and supplier relationships need to be structured around zero ongoing cost to beneficiaries. If FLOSS holds as an assumption, it has to hold all the way down the chain: from software selection through to what gets installed on donated hardware going into a school.
The other assumption worth naming: volunteer capacity is the limiting resource, not money. That changes how procurement timelines get scoped. A standard PO process assumes someone can follow up with a supplier tomorrow. NZRT’s model assumes follow-up happens when xc has connectivity in Northland and an agent can push the next step. That is a real constraint, not a risk to manage away.
These are not blockers. They are the shape of the architecture. The Stakeholder Map makes clear who receives --- students, kura, community organisations --- and that clarity is useful for procurement because it defines what fit for purpose actually means. Hardware going into a school needs to be reliable, simple to support, and zero-cost to operate long-term. Those three criteria rule things in and out immediately, which is more useful than a general preference for open-source.
